Activity:  Calligraphy

Location: Speen Village Hall

Timings: First & third Thursday between 2- 4pm.

Description: This small group of about 10 members meets twice a month and we usually break for a cup of tea, prepared by members in turn, and chat/discussion in the middle of the afternoon.

We try to have visits to exhibitions from time to time and to have outside demonstrators when possible though this is less easy to arrange. Sometimes one of our members will demonstrate a new idea or newly acquired skill. (EG Origami, card making, )

We like to study a particular script for possibly 6 – 8 weeks learning about the background, origin and usage initially followed by our attempts at writing the script. To do this we have all purchased special Calligraphy pen-holders, nibs, ink and paper as well as suitable books from which to gain inspiration. For each script we aim to end up with an example to include in our personal ‘portfolio’.

We have, in the past, made quills from swan, duck and goose feathers and can report that these actually worked.

Most of us make our own birthday and Christmas cards and we do try to keep our U3A ‘welfare’ member supplied with suitable cards for sending to members when ill or at similar times.
